Pohaku Soap
POHAKU means stone or rock in Hawaiian. It also means human relationships and foundations.
Since ancient times, Hawaiians have used pohaku to build the foundations of their homes, and they have used them in every aspect of their lives, including hunting, cooking, and ceremonies. The lava rocks born from volcanoes are said to be the incarnation of Pele, and are thought to contain mana, so they have been treated with great care.
The Hawaiian islands were born from lava flowing during eruptions, and eventually life was born in the land. In Hawaii, which is still changing every day, lava has come to be seen as a symbol of the beginning of new life.
On August 8, 2023, a devastating fire struck Maui, burning down the city of Lahaina, which was once the state capital, and turning the land into pitch black overnight.
I remember a few months after the fire, when green branches and leaves began to appear little by little from the little life that remained beneath the earth, adding color, and a ray of hope shone into my once-desponding heart.
In this world where yin and yang repeat like a loop, black is the extreme of yin and also the appearance that exists just before a new life begins.
The fire, which had been causing a great deal of turmoil and exposed a wide range of problems, brought out the emotions of the residents, and became the catalyst for a major change from destruction to regeneration.
A year has passed since so many lives and memories were lost in this fire, and we wanted to create a pohaku that would serve as a symbol of "rebirth from destruction" and to express our feelings for the former Lahaina, Kula, and people who were lost in the fire.
The materials we chose were from plants that have a strong connection to the area where the fire occurred, such as the fruitful mango trees of Lahaina (mango butter), coconuts (oil and activated charcoal), plumerias planted on graves (fragrance), Kula lavender (infused oil), macadamia (oil), and Lokelani rose (tincture).
As with our other products, a portion of the proceeds from sales will be donated to protecting the watershed and virgin forests on the peaks of West Maui, which are the source of water for the island of Maui.
